Pricing your gym memberships: the decision most owners keep putting off
Most gym owners know their prices need a look and keep delaying it. How to think about the decision clearly, without guessing.
Ask a gym owner when they last changed their prices and you will often get a pause. Pricing is the decision that keeps sliding, because it feels risky. Meanwhile rent, wages and costs keep moving.
Price follows the offer
Before you change a number, be clear on what members are paying for. Coaching, community, results, convenience. If you cannot say it in a sentence, a price change will feel arbitrary to members and to you.
Look at what you already know
You have the data: who stays, who leaves, which memberships sell and which nobody picks. Start there, not with what the gym down the road charges. Competing on price in a busy market is a race you rarely win.
Tell members early and plainly
Members handle change better than owners expect when it is explained honestly and in advance. Surprises are what lose people. The front desk needs to know the reasons and be ready for the conversation.
Do not decide alone
Pricing touches retention, staffing and the offer all at once. That is why it is one of the decisions Dai works through with owners. He has made these calls with his own money at CrossFit BC; read Lessons from co-owning CrossFit BC.
