Founder burnout: the signs you are ignoring

By Dai Manuel · Updated October 5, 2026

Burnout rarely arrives as a crash. It shows up as small trades you stop noticing.

Founders rarely burn out in one moment. It is a slow series of trades.

Key takeaways

Notice the trades you are making

  1. Compare this week with a week when you felt more capable.
  2. Note changes in sleep, movement, patience and connection.
  3. Reduce or share one avoidable demand rather than adding another task.
  4. Get professional support if persistent symptoms are affecting daily life.

The quiet signs

Training becomes optional. Sleep becomes negotiable. Reading stops. Decisions you used to make in minutes take days.

Why it matters to the business

The company runs on your judgement. Poor sleep and sustained strain can make clear thinking harder. That does not mean every tired decision is wrong.

Where to start

Small. Fifteen minutes of movement, five minutes of stillness, ten minutes of reading. That is the 2% Solution, and it is built for people with no spare time.

If you want someone to hold you to it, read about executive health coaching on the coaching page.

The 2% Solution started as a book and a podcast. You can find both at DadBody, Dai's site for fathers getting their health back.

What the sleep research does and does not tell us

A meta-analysis of 70 articles examined short-term total sleep deprivation and found a large effect on lapses in simple attention (g = -0.776). This supports taking sleep loss seriously. It does not quantify the effect of an ordinary busy week, diagnose burnout or prove a coaching programme works. Use changes in sleep as a reason to review demands, not as a verdict on your ability.

Support and limits

Coaching and small habits are not substitutes for medical care or mental health treatment. If persistent anxiety, low mood or sleep problems are affecting daily life, speak with a qualified health professional.
