As we age, we find our bodies don't always move as well as we remember.
One day we wake up and notice that rolling out of bed is harder. We have aches and pains in places that haven't felt that way before. We wonder, 'How did this happen?' and then as if a moment of brilliant clarity slaps us upside the head, we flash back to the past decade of our less than healthy, lifestyle choices. A lifestyle riddled with hours and hours of sitting.
Sound familiar?
If it does, you aren't alone. I won't go into all the obvious negative effects of a sedentary lifestyle (
you can read this article for that
). I'm here to say as far gone as you may 'feel' you are from your older, more mobile and less-achy self - you can get back there!

For the past 11 years, I've had moments of fantastic fitness but I've also had a lot of moments of injuries, which threw me for a proverbial loop. One thing that I've tried my best to be consistent with is respecting my body's ability to move... to move well. You see, there's no glamorous PR's with stretching, mobility work or yoga for that matter, is there? But we should treat it with more respect than any sport, in my opinion. Our body's ability to move freely through a wide array of motion is what determines our quality of life. Don't quite believe me, yet?
Imagine a day when you can't bend forward to tie your shoes. A day when you can't get off the couch without someone lending you a hand. The day when you are unable to clean yourself after you've finished your bathroom business. Graphic? Maybe. But this is a fact of life that we have to be willing to accept as we age if we don't look after our body's basic wants. We want to feel 'good' and be able to move where we want, when we want and have an undeniable right to do so pain-free, in my opinion.
This is where a mobility maintenance plan comes into play.
If you aren't practicing daily movement workouts - stretch sessions - or as Kelly Starrett coined, a Mobility WOD, then why not?
It's only a matter of time until something gives and at that time I know you'll be ready to fork over a lot of dollars to RMT's, chiros, massage therapists, and a slew of other professionals to get you back to moving without pain again.
(Just a note - I've been there and done that - hence my passion on this point!)
