How to Stay Keto with Fast Food on the Go
One of the real challenges of the ketogenic diet is the amount of preparation needed to be successful. If someone on the keto diet forgets to pack their lunch, it’s going to be very difficult to track something down that goes along with the diet. In this article keto on the go options will be discussed. Are you prone to leaving your lunch on the kitchen counter? Then read on as there will be some great options for keto dieters in that spot.

Don’t make a habit of not being prepared!

Okay, first let’s get this out of the way. While this article does have some things to do in order to get someone on the ketogenic diet to their next meal, this is not something that should be happening often. Someone who constantly isn’t prepared for their next meal probably isn’t going to have long-term success on the keto diet.

Alright, on to the keto tricks while on the go.

6 Tips to Keep You Keto When On the Go

1) Gas station snacks

While there are not a lot of keto-friendly snacks at the gas station, there are a few of them that can be found at almost all of them.

One of these snacks is almonds. There are single-serve portions of nuts at almost every gas station. Be careful and make sure to read the label. Make sure they aren’t honey roasted or include some type of flavoring. Either way, make sure to read the label for that coveted information: carbohydrates and net fiber.

Another gas station snack is beef and cheese sticks. Sometimes these will both come together in a nice package. While these seem like they would be a slam dunk and have almost no carbs, sadly this is not the case. Many times there will be hidden carbs in beef sticks. Many companies like to load them up with sugar and that turns them into a no go. These are a great option, but be sure to proceed with caution.

A keto-friendly gas station snack is pork rinds. Many people are not a fan of pork rinds, for many reasons. However, many other people are pork rind fans and they are an incredible option for someone on the keto diet. These are great not just while on the go or anytime. You will find pork rinds in the home of many keto dieters. They are high fat, low carb and come in a variety of flavors. A large percentage of pork rinds are zero carbs. Take down a bag (or even half of one) and that results in being extremely full.

2) Grab a coffee

When you are stuck out on the go without a keto-friendly option as a meal, sometimes it is necessary to just get to the next best meal. If you are a coffee lover, you are probably aware that it is quite the appetite suppressant. When someone is feeling hungry, it’s very likely that a cup of coffee can push back the next meal by at least an hour. Remember, when you are stuck out on the road with nothing that fits your diet, the only goal is to survive on to your next meal and maintain ketosis. Trying to come up with the best culinary options is not an option here, but just surviving on the diet.

3) Chug some water

This doesn’t pertain to everyone, but for some people drinking a great deal of water is an appetite suppressant. It’s pretty simple, isn’t it? Grab a 24 oz. water and chug it and as a result, the next meal will be pushed back for an hour or two. By then you will be able to get home and prepare the keto-friendly meal you are looking for.

4) Staying Keto on fast food

When many people think of fast food, they think of burger and fries, which are obviously in the no-go zone when it comes to keto. In order to find a low carb option at a fast food restaurant, some creativity may be needed.

Bunless burgers are an option awesome for keto dieters. These are usually high fat and low carb, which is perfect. Be careful when it comes to their toppings. Having a ton of ketchup on the burger is something to be careful of. Ketchup lovers can have some, but don’t go too far. Mustard is a better option due to the low carbs.

Yes, there are salads at fast food restaurants. No, they aren’t the best salads out there. That said, remember, we are just looking to survive and maintain ketosis. Someone can choke down a grilled chicken salad and maintain ketosis. Some of the fast food chains might surprise you with their salads. They’re not too bad!

Be sure to grab the mobile app for all of the fast food options that are out there. Most fast food chains have an app. Why do you need the app? Because it gives you the ability to see every item on the menu. When someone pulls up to the drive-thru and hears, “Can I help you?” the pressure is on and someone can be rushed into a quick decision and not get exactly what they want. Instead, when someone has the app on their iPhone or Android, they can simply pull into the restaurant they want, download the app and then take as much time as necessary to find the perfect fast food keto meal.

Another perk of having the app is being able to be a huge pain when you order but not have to actually tell the person at the counter all of the modifications on the order. It’s easier for many people to put no bun on the order than it is to tell the person at the window. Plus you don’t have to worry about the funny looks or stupid questions when you order in the app. Pull up to the window, tell them your order number, and you are on your way.

Here is a great resource for low carb fast food options.

5) Pack low-carb pitas or flatbreads

Joseph’s makes low-carb pitas and flatbreads. If you keep these in your car or in your bag, it will make life much easier for you. Simply pull through the drive-thru at your favorite fast food restaurant. Instead of having to eat just a bunless burger, now you can use a low-carb pita or flatbread to have a very solid burger option. These contain from six to ten net carbs. Again, this is not something you are going to want to do daily, but when you are in a jam with no keto-friendly food, this is a great way to get out of it.

6) Don’t give in!

Remember, there is always a way to make it through your day and maintain ketosis. Whether you have to eat a bunless burger, grab a small bag of almonds or rough it out for a couple of hours of hunger, you can do it! Whatever you do, don’t give in!

It would be easy to pull into Taco Bell and crunch down a combo meal and have a soda to go with it. Remember, when you are knocked out of ketosis, it will take 2-3 days to get back there. Do not let that happen!
